119. 1975 Christopher Ryan

Okay, feeling a bit sentimental here…it was 1977, I still lived in Vancouver and I wanted to be a fashion designer and I was planning a move east to study at Ryerson Polytechnic. I was dating a man by the name of Robert Watts. His ex boyfriend, but still close friend and housemate, was Vancouver designer Christopher Ryan. They asked me to come and spend a day in the studio. They had just finished a collection and there was much to tidy up and put in place and that was my job for the following two days. At the end they asked me how I liked it, and I eagerly responded that I thought it was the best job ever, after all, being around cloth and patterns, in a funky factory, with great people, what wasn’t to love. They looked at each other and in unison groaned “no”. I asked what the problem was. It turned out they had brought me in to see the not so glamorous side of fashion in the hopes of changing my mind…
