80. 1942 THE “WRENS”

The name “WRENS” was first given to the Women’s Royal Naval Service in Great Britain and in following, to the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service. The Canadian branch was established in July of 1942. Canada’s Admiralty had been slow to see the importance of bringing women into the RCN, however, during the course of World War II, some 6,500 women would enlist and serve in 39 “non-combatant” occupations and over 1,000 of those personnel served overseas.
