CANADIAN FASHION: CLOTHESLINES

IT’S FALL…DON’T YOU WISH YOU HAD ONE OF THESE TO PUT ON NOW…FROM SHELLEY WICKABROD AND BERNARD McGEE, THE ICONIC “CLOTHESLINES TRENCH”. I CLEARLY RECALL THAT IF SOMEONE HAD ONE, THEY HAD TWO, OR THREE, DIFFERENT COLOURS, DIFFERENT WEIGHTS, AND WORN OVER AND OVER. THIS COAT SPANNED NOT ONLY SEASONS, BUT WAS PRODUCED ANEW AND LOVED FOR MANY YEARS. I CHOSE THE ILLUSTRATION, IN BERNARD’S GEOMETRIC HAND, FROM 1979, AS IT WAS THE YEAR I MOVED TO TORONTO TO STUDY FASHION AT RYERSON, AND SOMEWHERE RIGHT ABOUT NOW, ONLY THEN, WAS THE FIRST TORONTO FASHION SHOW I ATTENDED…A CLOTHESLINES EXTRAVAGANZA THAT MADE ME WEEP. I KNEW I HAD PICKED THE RIGHT CITY AND THE RIGHT CAREER!
