Just when “America’s Next Top Model” announces its demise, and everyone mourns the end of an era of fashion television, what happens? Apple and WME/IMG come to the rescue.

On Tuesday, Made2Measure, the first TV channel from the sports/entertainment/fashion behemoth WME/IMG, and one devoted entirely to fashion (broadly defined), is debuting exclusively on Apple TV, thus underscoring yet again Apple’s desire to be seen as the No. 1 tech brand in fashion, as well as WME/IMG’s belief that fashion and entertainment are pretty much becoming one and the same, and giving all of us the opportunity to decide whether they are right.

The program lineup is the broadest, and most high-minded, I’ve seen yet from a fashion channel. Unlike the Style Network, the former all-fashion TV channel from NBC Universal, which was largely devoted to reality and how-to programming and is now called the Esquire Network and shared with Hearst, M2M will show…

HOW QUICKLY THEY FORGET.

IN 1985 I WAS A CANADIAN FASHION DESIGNER AND ALONG WITH COLLEAGUES AND FRIENDS, LIVED-AND-BREATHED-FASHION. WE DEVOURED WHAT MAGAZINES WE COULD GET OUR HANDS ON, AND OCCASIONALLY, AN UNSCHEDULED BROADCAST FROM THE USA, A HALF HOUR WITH ELSA KLENSCH, WOULD APPEAR AND DELIGHT US. THE NEWS THAT OUR OWN CITY-TV WAS GOING TO BROADCAST A WEEKLY 1/2 HOUR OF FASHION WAS HUGE NEWS AND WE WAITED WITH GREAT HOPE. ONCE JEANNE BEKER AND TEAM ARRIVED ON THE AIRWAVES WITH THE CLOTHES, THE DESIGNERS AND THE BACK STORY: THE STUFF THAT MADE THE ZEITGEIST SING, WE WERE HOOKED. IT DID NOT TAKE LONG FOR “FT” TO BROADCAST INTERNAIONALLY AND BY 2001, THE DEMAND WAS SO STRONG THAT “FT” THE 1/2 HOUR SHOW BECAME A SEGMENT ON CITY’S BY-SUBSCRITION-24-HOUR “FASHIONTELEVISIONCHANNEL” AND BOTH WERE BEAMED WELL BEYOND CANADA’S BORDERS.

Tuning in to Fashion Television has been a weekend ritual for fashion lovers — and men hoping for a quick peek of a naked supermodel — for longer than said supermodel has been alive.

It has been so long, the ritual has hit a record.

This month marks FT’s 25th season on air, making it the world’s longest running fashion series, seen by 3 million viewers and voyeurs every week.

FT has had incredible longevity for any television show, let alone one about fabulousness rather than news, traffic and weather. And its one and only host, Jeanne Beker, has had one of the longest on-air careers of anyone other than a man, newscaster or Barbara Walters.

“We were the first to cover fashion as entertainment,” says Beker, explaining the no-brainer that became the Big Idea that is FT.

“We didn’t cover it as fashion per se. We never asked ‘Why beige?’ We wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes, the creative process and the crazy, eccentric, creative people in that world.”

FT is syndicated in 140 countries around the globe, and is the most widely syndicated show its parent, Citytv, ever created. The landmark birthday was celebrated with a star-studded party Tuesday, a slick commemorative magazine and an anniversary special airing on CTV (its current owner) at 7 p.m. Sunday.
