CANADIAN FASHION: ROOTS / PART 2

ROOTS 13 FROM 40 YEARS

I WASN’T AMONG THE FIRST OF THE ROOTS PURCHASERS. I WAS STILL IN MY GLAM-ROCK-PLATFORM-SOLED-HIGH-HEELED-SHOES-FROM-THE-VILLAGER, ON GRANVILLE STREET. BUTTERFLY-COLLARED-SHIRTS-FROM-APPLEBY AND HIGH-WAISTED-JEANS-FROM-SEAFARER. ALADDIN SANE WAS THE SOUNDTRACK.

AS HIGH SCHOOL MORPHED INTO ART SCHOOL, THE NEGATIVE-HEELED-EARTH-SHOES-FROM-ROOTS WERE IT. SWITCH THE LP TO NEIL YOUNG. DENIM OVERALLS (WHICH I EMBROIDERED WITH A RAINBOW) AND MEXICAN PEASANT SHIRTS. THE SHOES WERE THE CARAMEL-COLOURED ONES, AND THEY CAME IN THE-GREEN-BOX-IN-THE-LOGO-PRINTED-BURLAP-BAG, AND WERE BOUGHT AT THE ROBSON STREET SHOP. “ANOTHER PHASE” SAID A ONCE CLOSE FRIEND AND QUESTIONED AS TO WHY I WOULD WEAR SUCH ODD THINGS.

FROM VANCOUVER TO TORONTO TO LIVE A LIFE IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY. THE POINTED-TOE-WHITE-SLIP-ONS WORN WITH MY “PARACHUTE” BLACK-PADDED-SHOULDER-SILVER-SNAP-FRONTED-CAVALRY-SHIRT AND WIDE-THIGHED-AND-TAPERED-TO-THE-ANKLE-BLACK-WITH-SILVER-STUDDED-PANTS. FRIENDS WORKED AT THE HAZELTON LANES ROOTS SO WE GOT THE UNUSUAL STUFF FIRST. THEY WERE FOLLOWED UP WITH A SLEEK-NAVY-TUXEDO-SLIP-ON. PARACHUTE’S OVERSIZED-BLACK-LINEN-BIG-SHOULDERED-BLAZER AND LOOSE-LEGGED-AND-CROPPED-HIGH PANTS. ALL TO A DJ MIXED TAPE OF BRITISH NEW WAVE.

FASHIONABLE ROOTS WERE GIVEN OVER FOR INDUSTRIAL-ADIDAS-BLACK-ON-BLACK-LEATHER-COACH-SHOES-WITH-WORK-SOCKS. THE CLOTHES WERE MY OWN DESIGNS. BUT MY ACCESSORY OF CHOICE WAS A ROOTS-BLACK-LEATHER-KNAPSACK WHICH I SHOULDERED FOR MANY YEARS. PHILLIP GLASS LOOPED IN THE BACKGROUND.

THE KNAPSACK WAS LATER ACCOMPANIED BY THEIR BLACK-LEATHER-BIGGER-THAN-A-SATCHEL-SMALLER-THAN-A-SUITCASE-CARRY-ALL, AND ALTHOUGH EXCEEDING MY PAYCHEQUE, LONG COVETED, AND NOW CONVINCINGLY-RATIONALIZED-AT-ANY-COST TO TRAVEL WITH ME ON MY FIRST-TRIP-ABROAD, PREMIERE VISION WITH MARILYN BROOKS,PARIS…

ROOTS-PROUDLY-CANADIAN, SPOTTED ON AN EARLY VISIT TO NEW YORK-THE-SAKS-FIFTH-AVENUE-ROOTS-IN-STORE BOUTIQUE. THE FAMOUS-RED-POOR-BOY-CAP WANTED AND WORN GLOBALLY.
